The captive king´s secret

Antonio Gómez Rufo was born in Madrid (Spain). In his early adolescence experimented and increase his literary call trough short stories, poetry and lyrics. In 972 he became a student in the Universidad Complutense (Law), son he took part of an intellectual group leaded by professor Enrique Tierno Galván, president of Socialist Popular Party (PSP).

During his years at University (1972-1977) he actively participated in what it was called youth movement, which collaborated to the democratic change.

From those days was his first book: An essay titled “An approach to the concept of the cultural revolution”. This book was published many years later under the name: The scared man.

Before finishing his last law course, a new mission came in his way: Run for the Socialist Popular party as candidate for Soria circumscription in the first democratic elections (june 15, 1977). On that time, he also collaborated as a journalist for different newspapers.

In 1978 he began his professional life in a triple direction: He worked as an attorney for the Raul Morodo’s firm, as a technical advisor for the General Administration Cinema Cabin in the Minister of Culture, and the adviser position he got in the Parliamentary Group with Socialist Popular Party in the first democratic court.

He then started to consolidate his literary career with journalist collaborations and his first two books published:

A Carl Marx biography and an essay, “ Ecology and Constitution" about the nature and its objectives in the 45th article of the 1978’s Spanish Constitution.

His professional life as an attorney didn’t take him apart of his literary creation.

In 1979 he became an advisor for the Spanish Film Archives. And in the desire to bring life to the cultural movement in Spain he founded a series of debates groups, one of the most important: Culture and Society Club (was directed by Julio Caro Baroja and Gomez Rufo was it’s general secretary), important members of that group were Antonio de Senillosa, Juan Luis Cebrián, Lauro Olmo, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Raúl Morodo, Paca Sauqillo, Juan Pablo Ortega, among others.

During those years he also collaborated with several nonprofit associations (so called ONGs), Sahara’s Friends Association, Movement for Peace, Disarmament and Liberty (MPDL in Spanish) Pro Jury association, Spanish-Chinese Friendships association and the Urban Culture association, among others.

In 1983 was asked by City Major, Tierno Galván to become the director of City County’s Cultural School and also for the La Villa Cultural Centre.

In this same year he published the Opera 5 (short stories) "The last summer for the Manelas", and the novel, "The Last Golliard", which became finalist in The Vertical Smile Award (organized by Tusquets Publishing House).

He kept collaborating as journalists for El Pais newspaper. To the death of professor Tierno Galván, he decided to end his work for Ayuntamiento de Madrid.


From 1987 to 1992, he collaborated with many newspapers (El Independiente, El Sol; and ORT Press as editorialist). During those years he published various books: "This is the way Madrid is", "Natalia", "The perennial Carnival", "The Naughty Bears Club", "Quite waters, deep waters" (all these, novels) "Madrid´s underworld" "Erotic games of launge" (both essays) and the children’s short story, "The clouds Hunter".


In 1992, he return to the Minestry of Culture with a position in the Spanish Literary Centre for a short period of time.

Until 1994 he worked in his novel "Brutu's memories" and colaborated in several mass media.

During the last seven years he has given conferences, round tables, colloquys and participated in semminars dedicated to literature.

From those years were his collaborations in the magazines Read, Book's Gazzete, the Book section of Spare Time Guide and the South Magazine published in Mälmoe, Sweden.

The Last Golliard was translated to German, and the Publishing House Autrement (Paris) published the essay "La nuit , a fleur de peau", about Madrid.


From 1995 till these days, he works exclusively as a writer. From that moment, he has published the novels: "The tears of Henan", "If you only knew", "Victory´s parade" (B Editions). An essay about Madrid: "Scenes from Madrid", the novel "Fishes´soul" in several europen countries, "The seas of fears" and "Farewell to men" (Planeta Publishing House).

Some of his novels have been translated in to other languages and published in many countries such as: Germany, France, Greece, Holland, Russia, Portugal, Poland, Rumania, Bulgary and Argentina.

At the same time, during his last years Gómez Rufo has maintain his personal compromise in his literacy creation (his novels: "Brutus´s Memoires", "If you only knew", "Fishes´soul" are elocuent samples) as in his journalistic collaborations (writes weekly an opinion column for Fax Press Agency that it is distributes in thirty spanish newspapers).

He has join the "Zero Poverty" proyect.

Antonio Gómez Rufo is the Vice-president for the ACE (Spanish Writers College), president of the Madrid Literary Circle, ex-member of the Patronage of the IPADE Foundation, , member of SGAE, and CEDRO. Member of the International Association of Black Novel Writers.
Winner of the Fernando Lara Award in 2005 for his novel “The secret of the captive king”.
